Edward Smith Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby was the pioneer of these two Classics. In 1779 he created the one and a half mile race for fillies that he named The Oaks after his estate. The Derby was created a year later for colts, with the title The Derby been decided upon by the flip of a coin. A wonderfully stylish day out, Vodafone Ladies Day is the place to dress up in your best to see the finest fillies competing in the feature race – The Vodafone Oaks.
The Vodafone Derby is one of the most famous sporting occasions in the world. The Derby remains the race that everyone wants to win, as horses and riders are pushed to their limit around the unique and challenging course.

The Breeders' Cup World Championships is an annual series of Grade I thoroughbred horse races operated by Breeders' Cup Limited. Since its inception in 1984, it has been a single-day event, but has now been expand to two days starting in 2007. The location changes each year. All sites have been in the United States, except in 1996, when the races were at the Woodbine Racetrack in Canada.
The event was created as a year-end championship for North American thoroughbred racing, and also attracts top horses from other parts of the world, especially Europe. The Breeders' Cup was founded in 1982 by John R. Gaines, a leading thoroughbred owner and breeder. Depending on one's definition of "sport", it is either the richest or second-richest day in sports, worth $18 million in prize money in 2006 and rising to $20 million for the second day of the 2007 event.
Grand National 2008
The Grand National is the most valuable National Hunt handicap horse race in the United Kingdom. It is the biggest betting race in the United Kingdom, and is popular amongst many people who do not normally watch or bet on horse racing at other times of the year.
